The donations request page came into being three months ago, and the first contribution came in -- anonymously -- this past week. To the benefactor: Thank you for your kindness! :-)

The Quote of the Month on the front page is new -- the monthly update happened a few days later than usual, but it's finally up.

Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk are both running special Free Delivery offers (with minimum amount orders) -- this is the first time I've noticed the UK store having a shipping special. Check out the Only Connect Shop for details.

So did anyone see the Shared Experience production of A Passage to India? Let me know what you thought -- I'd love to hear about it. I'm still working on a new page with info about the play.

Best wishes --JYW

14 October 2002, 19:22 PDT

Greetings folks...I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page, and added a new tribute to Forster by Toan Pham on the "Why I appreciate E. M. Forster" page.

India on stage: If you're in the UK, don't forget to see Martin Sherman's adaptation of Forster's A Passage to India! It's put on by the London theater group, Shared Experience (SE). The show has already opened, but is currently on tour through 2 November). More details (specific dates, theaters, production notes, etc.) are available at the Shared Experience site. If anyone does attend one of the shows, I'd be interested in hearing about the production. Just let me know. Since the last update, I received some great images from Ian Whitaker of SE. Thanks again Mr Whitaker! I hope to post a few before the next update: I am working on a separate page, which will be devoted to stage adaptations of Forster's work.

Until next time --JYW

14 September 2002, 19:59 PDT

I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page, and made some minor modifications here and there within the site...nothing drastic.

I am currently working on another remodel of 'Only Connect' -- not so much with content but usability (specifically navigation and page layout). It's been three years since the last design makeover, and it's about time for a change, I think. My top design rule is, in effect, "keep it simple yet useful." You will not see or experience any unnecessary scripts, flashy images or sounds. And I promise never to allow pop-up ads. The primary concern will be to offer information, and to do it in the most accessible and streamlined way possible.

The new design unveiling will probably take place in about a year's time -- six months is a very fast projection -- since I can only work on the site infrequently. If you are a frequent visitor and have any feedback or suggestions for the redesign, feel free to let me know.

Hope everyone is doing well! The summer is almost over -- enjoy. If you're in the UK don't forget the stage production of A Passage to India this fall (see entry below from 19 August). --JYW

19 August 2002, 20:12 PDT

As usual, the Quote of the Month on the front page has been changed.

A way to show your support: After much thought, I've decided to put up a donations request page. It's been over two years since I opened the Only Connect Shop -- basically it was to provide convenient access for site visitors to buy a Forster book. However I also hoped that the Amazon commissions would help with the site hosting costs... but so far, not much. Trust me, I really wouldn't ask for donations just for kicks! So please, if you enjoy and find this site helpful, consider making a contribution. You can even make a donation anonymously. Every amount helps!

India on stage: And last but definitely not least, I received an email recently from Ian Whitaker, the marketing manager for Shared Experience (SE), a critically acclaimed theater group based in London, England. SE's latest production is Martin Sherman's adaptation of Forster's A Passage to India, to be directed by Nancy Meckler. The production will be presented throughout England -- it opens on 19 September in Surrey; the tour will then go on to dates in Bath, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Warwick and Guildford (where it's scheduled to end on 2 November). Check it out! More details (specific dates, theaters, production notes, etc.) are available at the Shared Experience site. Too bad I probably won't be able to go see it... If anyone does attend one of the shows, I'd be interested in hearing about the production and/or getting a copy or scans of the play's programme. Just let me know. Thanks again to Mr Whitaker for the notice.

Until next time, cheers -- JYW

14 July 2002, 00:17 PDT

The Quote of the Month on the front page (a quote about the tie between parents-children from Where Angels Fear to Tread) appears this time thanks to an e-mail from Ms Sandra K. from New Zealand. Thanks again Ms K! I've also added it to the Forster quote collection.

Not much to report otherwise. I've made some changes here and there, but nothing too major.

Cheers --JYW

13 June 2002, 13:51 PDT

As done every month, I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.

I still haven't heard from some folks after my disk failure. Please, if you haven't heard from me recently, send me a note.

Off-topic, but something I'd like to mention anyway: if you would like a Web site designed or would like some input on how to make an existing one better suited in terms of usability, I'm available for freelance work. Just send me a line. I'd love to work with fellow Forsterites.

Cheers. :-) --JYW

15 May 2002, 07:03 PDT

Just changed the Quote of the Month on the front page. Other than that, no news is good news. Hope everyone is doing well. And, once again, please read the announcement from 26 April if you haven't already done so. Thanks! --JYW

26 April 2002, 01:47 PDT - Important Notice!

I know it's a little early for the monthly update, but this is sort of in the "emergency" vein...

On 14 April, I was in the middle of preparing for a disk backup when the unthinkable occurred. To make a long story short: my computer's primary hard disk failed, and the lost data included all of my e-mails (sent and received) over the past 4 years at least. Ouch. Fortunately, my Web site files were not involved in the loss, although many of my applications were. In any case, I've been trying to get my computer back up to satisfactory status.

So, if you sent me a message and never heard back from me, please do send me another. Even if you did receive a response from me, please send me a message, because I no longer have your e-mail address stored (people in this category I would love to hear from: David Spanswick and Stephen Pollock-Hill).

To send a new message, you can use the contact form (or your own mail client). You can forward any of your/our old correspondence to jyw [at] myrealbox [dot] com. Every bit helps.

Thanks for your patience and understanding while I try and get back on my feet! --JYW

10 April 2002, 23:40 PDT

Hi folks -- just a few updates:

Still need to email some people. If you haven't heard from me already, expect a reply within the next couple of days. (Just a tip for people who email me and never seem to get a swift response: try sending me your message within the first 15 days of the month -- I usually catch up with mail around the time I do the monthly update to this site.)

Hope things are going well. Enjoying the spring, I hope! --JYW

12 March 2002, 02:49 PST

Well, I just spent the last three hours making various updates to nearly all the pages here. Mostly the time was devoted to reworking code. A lot of it isn't apparent on the pages, so you'll just have to trust me on this! :-)

As for changes visible to the reader... aside from the Quote of the Month on the front page, I added a bit of text to Who is Forster? and the Links to other sites pages. The major updates were (finally!) implementing mail forms on the Contact the maintainer and Why do you appreciate Forster? pages. Now, you can just fill out a convenient form and send me a message, right from your browser! No more having fill in my preferred subject headers and using your email client to send me a note (although, you can still do that if you want). (I almost forgot to mention an important note: my e-mail address has changed! Please update your address books to jyw [at] myrealbox [dot] com.)

And a very late, but sincere thanks to Stephen Pollock-Hill, who sent me a great e-mail long ago and I only am now addressing. Thanks Mr Pollock-Hill! --JYW

6 March 2002, 01:08 PST

Just made some changes to content to reflect (current) timeliness. I'll be back in a few days to change the Quote of the Month. --JYW

19 February 2002, 02:24 PST

Well, the Salt Lake City Olympics are certainly making a lot of news... Hope everyone is enjoying them.

I'm still working on updating the contact page. I did change the Quote of the Month on the front page, as usual. Until next time -- JYW

10 January 2002, 03:45 PST

Happy new year! Hope everyone had a good holiday season.

I changed the Quote of the Month on the front page, as well as some minor changes around the site. I'm working on revamping the contact page. Hopefully it'll be up by the next monthly update. --JYW

12 December 2001, 01:46 PST

Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page. I have to admit, it's getting more and more challenging to find a good quote that I haven't already featured in the past couple of years (good and short enough, too). Feel free to share your ideas.

BTW, two people e-mailed me regarding EMF and I still need to get back to you. If you sent me a message and are still waiting for a reply -- it's coming right after I finish this!

Tangent: I was channel surfing last night and came upon what I instantly recognized as the opening credits of Merchant/Ivory's Maurice. I was rather rattled, for two reasons: I hadn't seen the film in ages, and never on TV, so I definitely was not expecting to see it being broadcast; and it was a Spanish dub! so I definitely was not expecting that. I didn't get to watch all of it -- I dislike dubs in general (not just the obvious detraction from the original actors' performances, but the lack of music -- an obvious detraction to Richard Robbins there), but hadn't seen the film in so long that I did watch an hour or so. I understood maybe 10 percent of the actual Spanish. After watching the hour, it made me (1) want to see the original, undubbed version complete with score, and (2) feel bad that I had forgotten so much of the Spanish I had learned... Too bad I didn't see it five years ago, when my Spanish language skills were at their peak. :-)

I wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy holiday season, and the same for the upcoming year. In case I don't write again before 2002 arrives: in your New Year's celebration on 1 January, remember to toast Forster on the 123rd anniversary of his birth. --JYW

15 November 2001, 02:25 PST

Updated some info (namely confirming some info on the new paperback of Selected Stories and removing the link to the PAL video of A Passage to India, since it's unavailable now) on the "Works by Forster" and "Film adaptations" pages. --JYW

13 November 2001, 19:40 PST

The Quote of the Month on the front page has been updated. Remember to participate in the tribute to Forster!

Winter is around the corner, as is Thanksgiving (in the U.S.)...take care. --JYW

2 November 2001, 18:28 PST

The Only Connect Site is once again listed in the Yahoo directory! It took a little over three months to get the listing reinstated (after it disappeared during our April-July server blitz). Thank to redfive at Yahoo for e-mailing me about the good news. Welcome back, Yahoo searchers!

BTW, it's the sixth anniversary of the site's birth (a.k.a. the site's sixth birthday) :-) and I hope you'll participate in the ongoing tribute to E. M. Forster that I set up last year.

I'll keep the Quote of the Month up for another few days before changing it. Until then --JYW

20 October 2001, 18:42 PDT

The reason for the delay in changing the Quote of the Month on the front page: I was out of town for a couple of weeks and unable to make any updates to the site.

I hope people around the world are getting by in this time of trouble. I haven't met anyone who wasn't affected by 11 Sept. ... since this space is supposed to be for Only Connect Site news, I won't go into too much detail here. If you're interested in reading more about more personal news, visit my own home page.

Until next time, best wishes. --JYW

10 September 2001, 04:08 PDT

Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page. Being in love with music myself, I have a personal fondness for the quote. :-) It's the first one featured here from A Room with a View, which is a little odd actually, given that I like the novel. I've also added that quote and a couple of others to the Selected Quotes page.

You should finally be able to find the site again on Google now, as well as other places that incorporate Google. The listing that the Only Connect Site used to have in the Yahoo directory still hasn't been reinstated, but if you use the Google-based search engine it should come up that way. Yeah, it's not as effective, but it's better than nothing.

Other than that...not much else right now. I still need to reply to a few e-mails, but I don't have many to go. Thanks for your patience! I always appreciate it. I'm also working on some more additions and mods to the place. It's a permanent work-in-progress. In any case, I hope everyone's summer was peaceful. Until the next update... --JYW

10 August 2001, 22:54 PDT

Just changed the Quote of the Month on the front page. I think that's pretty much it for this time.

Before I go though, I do want to thank everyone who updated their links to the Only Connect Site in response to my e-mails. I'd particularly like to thank Heiko Zimmermann of Aspects of Forster for sending the word out on his pages about this site's move. OC is still not listed in Yahoo -- and although I'm not surprised about the slow reaction there, I'm waiting for Google to index the site again, this time on the new server. Since the move happened about three weeks ago, traffic is growing slowly but right now it's still less than 20 percent of what the traffic used to be. Again, if you have a Web page I'd be grateful if you'd update links or post any messages with the new address to this site. Thanks! --JYW

27 July 2001, 04:55 PDT

Well, at this insanely early hour I have just finished checking all of the links to external sites, and fixed a bunch of them. I also got rid of some dead links to Amazon.co.uk, and added a few for new (and pertinent to EMF) books, videos, etc. that were released during this site's "hiatus." Most of the modifications are on the Film Adaptations, Works by Forster and Works about Forster pages.

The positive side to going through all of the Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk links was noticing some new Penguin editions that came out recently, as well as at least two that are forthcoming! I must say, we Forsterites are living in a good time to have this wealth of Forster material available. :-)

Earlier in the week I corrected some 404 errors to some images (they should be working now), and modified some miscellaneous things that got jumbled because of the move. Please let me know if you notice any more dead links or other bugs!

I'm still rather frustrated because, in the two months that this site was pretty much inaccessible, the folks at Yahoo! decided that it had died for good and removed the listing for it in the Yahoo directory (it took about two years for it to be included). :-( I find that especially disheartening because the majority of traffic to the Only Connect Site had previously originated from Yahoo searches...and now it will be difficult for people to find the site. If you own a Web site, you can help by updating the link to this site to the new address.

That's about it for now. Thanks for reading! I always appreciate it. I'll be back here again in mid-August for the monthly update, if not sooner. Take care. --JYW

23 July 2001, 16:25 PDT

The site is alive again!

I sincerely apologize for the abrupt "outage" -- this site was unavailable from late April (as far as I know) until today because of server/domain problems. I wasn't able to resolve the problem until recently. You may have noticed that this site is now on a completely new server, with a new domain name and folder of www.musicandmeaning.com/forster/. Please update your bookmarks and favorites lists to reflect the new URL. Hopefully this site will not have to undergo any moves for quite a while.

I have finished moving the site to this new location, and for the most part checked/fixed many things that may have caused navigational errors. I will be back shortly (read: within the week) to report any tune-ups. Please do let me know if you experience any broken links or other problems with the site, and I'll correct them straightaway. Thank you for your patience! --JYW

4 April 2001, 16:35 PDT

Finally I'm back! Sorry for the delay. Hope everyone is well this spring.

Latest updates:

  • Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.
  • Added an essay by Andrew Ross to the new "Why I appreciate Forster" tribute page. You can still send in your own entry! Please do, it's great hearing from fellow Forsterites.
  • Had to remove the various Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk prices from the Film Adaptations, Works by Forster and Works about Forster pages, as it's apparently not permitted under the associates' terms & conditions policy. Amazon still has good prices, though, so although I can't advertise prices I'm going to keep recommending the store as a convenient Forster-related books/movies resource.
  • Made some other various updates to the site disclaimer and news & announcements archive.

I'll try to return with another update within the next couple of weeks. --JYW

28 February 2001, 22:57 PST

Okay...finally checked all of the Amazon prices and made any appropriate corrections. I noticed a few books that have become "out of print" at both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, including P. N. Furbank's biography of Forster. Hopefully this is a temporary thing. --JYW

18 February 2001, 00:18 PST

Wow! Amazing how it's been over a month already. I've been extremely busy with three new projects, plus I got sick too, which is probably why time seemed to accelerate even more. Anyway, I've updated the Quote of the Month on the front page; however, I will check the Amazon prices later, and hopefully post any of those updates within this week. Take care. --JYW

11 January 2001, 00:36 PST

So, a week and a half into the new year already! Hope all is going well for you. Latest updates:

  • Fixed a couple of links that previously led to incorrectly-corresponding Amazon products.
  • Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.
  • Checked/updated all of the Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk prices on all relevant pages. A few of the prices down even more than last month, and a few went back up again.

Still working on getting a Forster story included on the site. Let's see if I have it done by next month. Cheers everyone for visiting! --JYW

24 December 2000, 18:03 PST

Just updated a link on the "Links to other sites" page, and updated some dates. Merry Christmas! --JYW

12 December 2000, 15:03 PST

'Tis the holiday season for many, many people out there. Just finished making some updates:

  • Added a few more 'order links' to the Works by Forster page, mostly links to Amazon.co.uk.
  • Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.
  • Checked/updated all of the Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk prices on all relevant pages. Many of the prices went down!

I'd like to wish everyone well during this holiday season, and a very healthy and happy 2001. And thanks to everyone who visited and sent such kind words about this site over the past year! I'll keep working on new improvements and I will maintain the once-a-month-at-least updates. --JYW

25 November 2000, 06:56 PST

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving, where applicable. I just fixed a display error on the Works inspired by Forster page, which I just noticed. Seems to have been mangled since June. Grrr. And no one told me because...? Anyway...the holiday season is now upon us. Certainly, the crazy holiday shopping season has begun. Take care and I'll be back in mid-December at the latest. --JYW

16 November 2000, 19:55 PST

Updated some 403 links on the links page, removed some dead links in the rest of the site.

15 November 2000, 01:26 PST

Hi there! Another round of updates:

  • Re-arranged and updated the Works by Forster page. Also got rid of the text version of this page, as Lynx browsers should be able to read the other one fine.
  • Added 'order links' to the Works by Forster page mentioned above. I haven't gotten around to getting all the amazon.co.uk links ready, but all the amazon.com links are there.
  • Added more to the Quotes page.
  • Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.
  • Checked/updated all of the Amazon prices on all relevant pages, and added/updated material to the main page of the Site Shop.
  • Also did some other maintenance (fixed dead links, etc.).

I still have some other stuff to put up, including a contribution from John Burke (no, haven't forgotten Mr Burke) and one from David Spanswick (nope haven't forgotten you either, Mr Spanswick). They should be up in time for the next monthly update.

It's getting chilly out there. Time for those coats and sweaters, if you live in a region where it's almost winter. It's amazing how fast this year elapsed. Take care. --JYW

2 November 2000, 16:19 PST

It's finally done. The 'Only Connect' Site's fifth anniversary event is open for participants. All you need to do is tell me why you like/appreciate Forster, and I will post my favorite messages on this site. The instructions and all of that is on the brand-new "Why do you appreciate Forster?" page. Write in! Send your messages.

I finally checked and found that I created the first fledging Forster page (which eventually would become this site) on 6 November 1995. So we're just in time.

Take it easy. And for goodness' sake, if you're a U.S. citizen, please vote! --JYW

30 October 2000, 17:55 PST

Updated a few Amazon prices and removed a couple of dead "buy" links on the Film adaptations and Works about Forster pages. Also expanded the footnote on the Contact the maintainer page to clarify what kind of correspondence I will and won't answer (when it comes to "Help me" requests).

Another update should be coming 1 November. --JYW

20 October 2000, 09:17 PDT

Just one update: a new title logo on the front page.

I did respond to all the e-mails waiting since the last time. If you still haven't gotten a reply from me, then your message might have been included in a folder of mail I lost. I'm sorry about the inconvenience, but please go ahead and write again if need be. --JYW

15 October 2000, 06:11 PDT

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time in the past few weeks to do much here. I've just changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.

As I said in last month's update, the 'Only Connect' Site's fifth anniversary is almost upon us (it's either 31 October or 1 November; I'll have to check). I'd still like to commemorate the occasion by running some sort of Forster appreciation event. In any case, I'll work on it and post a detailed update of the event (whatever it may be) before the usual update in mid-November (I'll post the news on either 31 October or 1 November).

Thanks, as always, for the e-mail messages. I'm going to respond to them now... :-) --JYW

14 September 2000, 20:09 PDT

Lots of updates!

  • Added/updated material to the main page of the Site Shop.
  • Added more content, images and 'buy links' to the Film Adaptations page.
  • Added a Google search box to the Links to Other Sites page.
  • Added a few images to the Works about Forster page.
  • Changed the Quote of the Month on the front page.
  • Also made some more minor/purely technical changes to a few other pages.

Opinions Requested: I recently realized that the fifth anniversary of the 'birth' of my Forster site is coming (late October 2000). Five years already since that little one-pager! It's really mind-boggling. I was thinking of ideas to celebrate in some way, or at least observe the anniversary in some special way. One idea was to have people write in about why they like Forster, or something along those lines, and then post my favorites here on this site. What do you think? Please send your opinions or ideas for this event.

Fall is almost upon us... enjoy the Olympics! -JYW

19 August 2000, 01:31 PDT

Along with the cold, the summer has siphoned off tankfuls of time. On the other hand, the e-mail box is full again since last month, and I will try to respond to everyone within the next few days.

Published update: yes, just one update (QOTM) on the front page.

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. The Olympics begin soon! -JYW

13 July 2000, 20:31 PDT

More updates:

Hope that July's going well for everyone. --JYW

3 July 2000, 14:53 PDT

Fixed a stylesheet conflict/display error on the "About this site & its maintainer" page. Hmm. It must have looked that way for weeks! Why didn't anyone tell me? :-/ --JYW

2 July 2000, 23:19 PDT

First and foremost: I've finally begun to roll out the long-promised "buy" features of the Only Connect Site Shop!

Here is a rundown of the new updates I've done:

The Quote of the Month on the front page is still the same -- I usually change the quotes about a week and a half into the month. Speaking of which... any suggestions?

Yanks: Hope you have a good Independence Day... Canadians: Hope you enjoyed Canada Day! --JYW

19 June 2000, 03:21 PDT

This month's update comes a bit later than usual, as the remainder of spring has brought some more busy times.

I am sorry if you sent an e-mail within the past few months and didn't hear from me (mostly requests for academic help). My correspondence/replies queue has a backlog of about three months (sigh) so I really would appreciate your further patience. If you really want a reply, and soon, send me another e-mail. Also: I have noticed recently that some people do not use the subject headings that I request on my 'contact' page. Please realise that my e-mail is filtered by subject; so if you do not use these specified headings, your message probably won't get read as soon as the correctly-headed ones. Anyway, thanks to all who wrote, and I'm sure you found the help you needed at the library! :-)

Some people have e-mailed me to ask what "Only connect" means. I've been debating over whether to put up some sort of info box on the front page, but until that debate concludes, you'll find more about the quote under the heading "What is the deal with 'Only connect'? What does it mean?" on the "About this site & its maintainer" page.

Further updates within the site: I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page, as well as modified/added material to the "Links to other sites", "Works inspired by Forster" and "About this site & its maintainer" pages. As for the Shop... this summer. Really. You will probably see it "open" more subtly and not necessarily as one huge page at once. Instead, first I will add the appropriate "buy" links alongside book titles on some pages. --JYW

15 May 2000, 19:01 PDT

Once again, a thank you to all who wrote. Each month at this time (when I update the site) I try to respond to everyone's notes, as I will within the next few days.

Same story as the last number of months: I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page. I probably won't get more done until next month, because I've had my attention diverted to my home page server (which, I found out recently, will be retired soon), and have been busy squaring away all of my files there. I almost forgot to change the QOTM this time around!

Enjoy the last few weeks of spring! --JYW

15 April 2000, 11:50 PDT

So, is April the cruellest month for you?

Thanks once more for all the messages re: this site. I'm going to try to respond to the current stack of those in the "awaiting a reply" box before the weekend expires.

I've changed the Quote of the Month on the front page for this month and included some past QOTM entries on the Selected quotes page (and revised some of the page's other content). --JYW

11 March 2000, 01:01 PST

Once again, thanks to everyone who sent kind words about the site, and apologies to those who requested a reply before now. It's been consistently hectic. It's as if I changed the Quote of the Month for February last week! Well, I've now changed it on the front page for March. --JYW

11 February 2000, 19:05 PST

I've been much busier than usual recently, so if you wrote me and would like an e-mail reply soon (read: within two weeks), go ahead and bug me about it. I have just changed the Quote of the Month on the front page, but that's all I have time for now. Cheers to everyone who sent me kind words about this site (in spite of everything!)...trust me, every word of encouragement helps. :-) --JYW

18 January 2000, 18:20 PST

Thanks to David Spanswick for filling in a couple of the publication years (Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson and Marianne Thornton) on the "Works by Forster" pages. Actually when I was making the updates I noticed that although the year for Marianne Thornton was on the table-less Works page, it was missing from the Works page with tables. So I must have overlooked writing it in sometime before. In any case, thanks again to Mr. Spanswick! --JYW

13 January 2000, 18:08 PST

In a perfect world, I would be unveiling the new Shop for this site right now, as well as the beginnings of a "Recommended Reading" section, but unfortunately a case of the flu interrupted my health for a while. I got sick a few days after Christmas, and the illness pretty much left me out of commission through New Year's Day (Morgan's birthday) until just last week. What a way to ring in the new year and new century (I refuse to say the overused and exploited "M" word)!

Although the Shop's appearance is behind schedule, I really hope to get it online within a handful of weeks. I also was unable to respond to many e-mails, and would like to apologize if you needed a quick reply. However my "e-mail maintenance" should be updated within the next few days. I have updated the Quote of the Month and the Links page.

I hope everyone else had a much better last week of 1999 and first week of 2000, and that the new year is getting off to a good start. --JYW

Ah, winter... my favorite season of the year. I wish everyone a great holiday season!

No major updates yet, but I am still working on the Shop. Actually, now I really need to get caught up on the 'Only Connect' site e-mails that have been piling up... :-)

Merry Christmas and happy new year; and remember to save and say a toast for Morgan on 1 January 2000, the 121st anniversary of his birth. Howards End drastically shaped and re-directed my life, and I'm sure all other Forsterites out there have something for which they have to thank Morgan. --JYW

If you are a return visitor, you may have noticed that the so-called "survey of the month" is no longer available. The feature was pretty much a test run, as I wanted to see how many people actually voted and the server response time, etc. Suffice it to say that I was less than impressed by the voter turnout and also am looking for a different poll service (or a script) that will allow me to archive surveys. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

For those of you interested, last month's survey question was "What is your favorite Forster novel?" It ran for a little more than 30 days, during which 150 votes were cast. Here are the results:

    1. A Passage to India (42)
    1. A Room with a View (42)
    3. Howards End (31)
    4. Maurice (16)
    5. [I haven't read any of his novels] (7)
    6. Where Angels Fear to Tread (6)
    7. The Longest Journey (4)
    8. [I can't decide] (1)

Despite the low number of votes (considering that this site averages about 75 hits a day), I found the results interesting. I voted for Howards End. I also thought it was interesting that so few people voted for The Longest Journey (it was Forster's own favorite), but perhaps it's because not many people have read it.

Major pending updates...

(1) The site shop; after a lot of thought, I've decided to join the Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk affiliate programs. That's as much as I can tell you now, but hopefully the shop will be on its feet well before the end of the year.

(2) A "Frequently Asked Questions" page; so far the list of Q/As is fairly short, but I think it will be a useful resource for many of the common queries I receive by e-mail.

Again, any comments, questions, etc. are welcome. If it seems like the updates are arriving slowly, it's because I'm concurrently remodeling my personal Web site. --JYW

The "100 Best Writers of the 20th Century" issue of Writers Digest is now available on newsstands, and the Digest's Web site now has the list of writers (including E. M. Forster) and accompanying links available. --JYW

I'm not yet quite finished with the updates I mentioned in the last entry, but you will have noticed that I've added the survey on the main index page, thanks to the service from PollIt.com. Like the quote, I plan to offer a different survey every month. Let me know if you have any suggestions for questions.

I checked the Writers Digest site yesterday -- the feature mentioned below isn't up yet. I'll keep you posted.

For those of you who e-mailed me recently (within the past month), I apologize if I'm lagging behind in my response(s). I will definitely try to finish up correspondence this weekend...thanks for your patience. --JYW

On 9/9/99, I received a nice e-mail from an editor at Writer's Digest and I thought I'd share it with everyone (the bolded text is my doing):

Greetings! Writer's Digest in its November issue will list the 100 Best Writers of the 20th Century as determined by our readers, staff and editorial advisory. Nominees were rated on their influence on the writing world; the quality of their work; and the degree to which their writing exhibits originality or experimentation.

E.M. Forster is among the writers on the list. At our Web site (www.writersdigest.com), we plan to run the names of the 100 Best writers along with links to sites about the writers. We plan to include your site in the list about E.M. Forster.

The November issue will be shipped to subscribers Sept. 27 and will be on sale at newsstands Oct. 19. We anticipate the Web site links will be available in very late September or early October.

    Cordially,

    Melanie Rigney
    Editor

So be sure to check for the November issue; when the Writer's Digest Web site runs its version, I'll be sure to announce it here. Thanks to Ms. Rigney for the info and for linking to 'Only Connect'! And of course, congrats to Morgan for being put on the "100 Best Writers of the 20th Century" list! (A few of his novels were also on the much-debated Modern Library's list of "100 Best Novels of the 20th Century" (was that what it was called?) released a while back.)

In terms of other news: I'm still working on the 'Only Connect' Shop. I'm also working on some surprises, so keep checking back. --JYW

After over a two-year hiatus, I've finally gotten around to updating the site and giving it a slightly newer look. Please feel free to browse through the pages.

Thanks for all your e-mails in the meantime...I haven't responded to them all, but I promise not to be so tardy from now on.

The new major additions to the site:

  • The "Works about Forster" page. It isn't extensive but it's a start.
  • The "Film adaptations" page. It's currently just a seedling page, but as I keep putting more material up, it should be helpful to those interested in watching film-ified Forster.
  • The "Links to other sites" page. I've tried to include every substantial and pertinent Web page I could find that was somehow related to Forster. If you know of one or more that you don't see, let me know.

If you're a return visitor, welcome back -- if you're a new visitor, I hope you find something that catches your interest.
